This is a seven-part Lesson wherein Student(s) will discover why it took eleven years to ratify the Constitution of The United States from the signing of The Declaration of Independence. Students will be immersed in the full story of the Declaration of Independence by guiding them through its creation, debate, adoption, printing and signing, while building core skills in historical analysis and civic reasoning. Students begin with a close reading of the Declaration’s opening lines to anchor their understanding in the text itself, then explore the major events of June–August 1776—1789 when it was ratified. Through structured discussion, primary‑sources and Q and A, learners examine why independence was contested, how Enlightenment and Biblical ideas shaped the Declaration’s language and how public communication influenced early American identity. The Lesson integrates guided questions with answers and reflection essay options to help Students evaluate the Declaration, both as a historical document and as a living statement of political and moral principles. By the end, Students will gain a clear understanding of the Declaration’s purpose, context and legacy, while practicing close reading, argumentation, collaboration and thoughtful community reflection.
 
This historic Lesson helps explain how the Declaration is a foundational political text that blends rhetoric, moral argument and political strategy. Teaching its drafting and signing develops Students’ skills in primary‑source analysis, historical empathy, civic literacy and critical reading—preparing them to evaluate how founding texts shape national American identity. The United States was founded on Biblical principals and values toward all people and a government that stood on both rebellion of a monarchy and deep desire for freedom. This Lesson strengthens Students’ ability to compare sources, evaluate historical claims and articulate theological applications with transparency and respect to all U.S. citizens.
