Students explore in this six-part Lesson, how humans have understood the shape and structure of the Earth across history, comparing flat‑earth and globe‑earth arguments from ancient to modern times. These arguments, or more accurately, apologetic statements (those statements that support a position in defense of that position, standing firm that position is correct in your understanding) then examine the scientific and theological shift from geocentrism to heliocentrism, focusing on how the Catholic Church responded to new astronomical evidence. Students also analyze Admiral Richard E. Byrd’s 1940’s polar missions as a case study in exploration, evidence‑gathering, and how real events can be reported accurately, or with much bias.
