This is a five-part Lesson wherein Student(s) will explore the life, leadership, and legacy of Tecumseh, the Shawnee leader who sought to unite Native nations against U.S. expansion in the early 19th century. Through historical analysis, discussion, and creative activities, students examine Tecumseh’s vision for intertribal unity, his diplomatic and military strategies and the lasting impact of his resistance movement on U.S. history.

Tecumseh is one of the most influential Indigenous leaders in North American history. Studying him helps students to understand Native American perspectives during the era of westward expansion and recognize the complexity of early U.S.–Native relations. This Lesson will analyze leadership qualities rooted in diplomacy, unity and cultural preservation in order to better develop critical thinking about land, sovereignty and historical narratives. Evidence‑based research shows that teaching Indigenous history through primary sources, multiple perspectives and culturally responsive student learning increases engagement, empathy and historical literacy and perspective.
