This Lesson is for older youth, parents, educators and youth leaders, but also family members, local social circles and those who interact with children who might be affected by Secondary Post Traumatic Stress Disorder issues. This is a five-part Lesson that provides a clear overview of Secondary PTSD in children, focusing on the neurobiology, behavioral signs and environmental factors that shape trauma responses. Participants will learn how the limbic system drives emotional reactivity, how trauma affects memory and stress hormones and why children may show fear, withdrawal or dysregulation even when they were not directly harmed. The Lesson emphasizes practical and compassionate strategies for creating safe, co‑regulation and predictable environments at home and school. This Lesson is designed to help understand what it takes to be aware of the world around us, and what grounds us while in this world.
This Lesson focuses on children exposed to trauma within their family or community, often showing symptoms that are misunderstood as misbehavior, defiance or emotional instability. Without trauma‑informed understanding, adults and educators may respond in ways that unintentionally increase fear or shame. This Lesson equips caregivers with the knowledge needed to interpret behaviors through a neurobiological, relational and spiritual lens, reducing stigma and increasing effective support. By understanding how Secondary PTSD develops and how the limbic system shapes responses, adults can create environments that promote stability, resilience and healing.
